You should never let it be known that you are
carrying a concealed weapon except to a police officer. A person that needs a deadly weapon for self
defense has an extreme tactical advantage. This tactical advantage
is so extreme that it is the one of the very few restrictions for citizens other
than restricting felons, mentally ill and the young from possessing a
firearm in Kentucky. When you expose a weapon:
-
First you give up the tactical advantage of
carrying the weapon concealed when you let others know you carry a weapon.
You lose the ability to use advantages of time, concealment, and distance as
tactical advantages when you become conspicuous. Surprise and a
vicious counter attack is often the best or only defense to stopping a
deadly assault and this is lost when you give up the advantage of concealed
carry.
-
Second you make yourself a target for the
worst of criminals that will assault you to steal the weapon for their own
purposes.
-
Third you frighten many people that fear
firearms and don't understand that some people need to carry a concealed
deadly weapon.
-
Fourth people that properly carry a weapon
(including police) view brandishing the weapon or showing it off as dangerous and
foolish making you seem foolish. Police often (and properly) find a
valid reason for removing the dangerous weapon from the foolish person that
can't or won't carry them properly.
